Local Standouts Shane and Demir Receive Qualifying Wild Cards
WASHINGTON (July 15, 2016) — Alexander Zverev, World No. 27 on the ATP World Tour, has accepted a wild card into the main draw of the Citi Open® Tennis Tournament. Main draw play begins Monday, July 18, at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center.
At 19, Zverev is labeled as one of the ATP Stars of Tomorrow and is the youngest player in the top 50 of the ATP World Tour rankings. Last month, the German teen made headlines when he defeated World No. 3 Roger Federer in the Halle Open semifinals.
University of Virginia recent graduate and former NCAA champion Ryan Shane will receive a wild card to the qualifying rounds. The 22-year-old from Falls Church, Va., played his first qualifying match in a tennis tournament at the Citi Open last year.
Also receiving a wild card to the qualifying rounds, 18-year-old Nikita-Girey Demir will participate in his first professional-level tournament ever. The Georgetown Preparatory School valedictorian and U.S. Presidential Scholar will be attending Stanford University in the fall. Demir currently trains at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation, the Citi Open’s owner and beneficiary.
