WASHINGTON (March 5, 2013)—Ticket sales for the 2013 Citi Open, the Washington area’s premier professional tennis tournament and recognized as one of the top 20 tournaments worldwide, go on public sale starting today. Part of the prestigious 2013 Emirates Airline US Open Series, the tournament will include play by top-ranked American John Isner and 2011 finalist Gael Monfils.
The tournament will be held July 27 – August 4 at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Stadium in Rock Creek Park (16th and Kennedy streets, NW). Today’s ticket on-sale is part of a national on-sale campaign for all Emirates Airline US Open Series events. Ticket pricing and package details are now available at www.citiopentennis.com, or the tournament hotline at 202.721.9500. Daily/Single session tickets are available through Ticketmaster. The ticket sales coincide with a national campaign and on-sale date for the entire Emirates Airline US Open Series.
The tournament has been a long-standing tradition in Washington, D.C., and has included legendary players such as Arthur Ashe, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, and Yannick Noah in its distinguished history. In addition to world-class tennis, the event will also feature plenty of fan enhancements and hospitality options such as the Corona Beach Bar, the Courtside Club restaurant and bar and daily special events like Family Day, Chef Challenge, Alumni Night, Wine Tasting Night, Military Appreciation Day and Box Seat Ticket Holder Appreciation Reception.
"Our approach each year is if you play tennis or own a tennis racquet in the Washington area, seeing the world’s best compete at the Citi Open is a must," Citi Open Tournament Director Jeff Newman said. "For those new to the tournament, or those who have never attended a professional tennis tournament at the highest level, give us a chance to show what you’ve been missing and why we have been recognized as Washington, D.C.’s No. 1 sporting event for three years in a row. We’ll make your experience one to remember."
The Citi Open is an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour 500-level event—the only 500-level tournament in the United States. The tournament is critical in world player rankings (the winner receives 500 ranking points), and the ATP World Tour recognizes the Citi Open as one of the top 20 tournaments worldwide. In addition, building off the overwhelming success of 2012, this year’s event will again include a Women’s Tennis Association international-level tournament. Combined, the Citi Open will offer more than $2 million in prize money.
As a part of the Citi Open’s long-standing commitment to the D.C. community, the tournament promotes the initiatives of the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF). The tournament’s owner and beneficiary, WTEF, is an educational and tennis organization that seeks to provide underserved children in the D.C. area a safe environment to learn critical life skills that will lead them to success. Since its inception in 1969, the Citi Open has generated millions for junior tennis initiatives and at-risk youth.
The first player to be announced in the 2013 field, John Isner has made the Citi Open a staple event on his summer calendar. Since his ATP World Tour debut in 2007, he has reached the quarterfinals or better in four of his five appearances at the tournament. Isner’s other career accomplishments include five ATP tour titles, reaching the quarterfinals of the London 2012 Olympic Games, leading the United States to the 2012 Davis Cup semifinal and winning the longest match in tennis history in Wimbledon in 2010.
Gael Monfils, who reached the tournament finals in 2011, is one of the most athletic and entertaining players in the game. Monfils suffered through a right knee injury on and off during the 2012 season but has started the 2013 season strong and is looking to regain the form that carried him to a career-high world No. 7 ranking in 2011. Isner and Monfils have also played in two of the most thrilling matches in tournament history, with each winning a three-set quarterfinal match against each other on their way to the finals.
