The women’s semifinals are set at the Citi Open with 2014 D.C. champion Svetlana Kuznetsova among those moving on to the Final Four.
Kuznetsova defeated No.8 seed Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-2, in a quarterfinal match that was interrupted by rain on Friday and concluded Saturday.
Kuznetsov will face Andrea Petkovic with a berth in the championship at stake. Petkovic saved match point in her quarterfinal triumph over No.6 seed Belinda Bencic.
Petkovic also reached the semifinals at last year’s Citi Open.
No.7 Donna Vekic is the only seed remaining in the WTA draw. Vekic beat Magda Linette 6-1, 7-6 (0) and will next face Saisai Zheng of China in tonight’s second semifinal.
Zheng overcame American qualifier Allie Kiick 6-3, 6-1. Despite the defeat on Saturday, the 23-year-old Kiick showed herself well in Washington, reaching her first career WTA quarterfinal.
Kiick, who missed two years on Tour while undergoing surgery on both of her knee and battling skin cancer, is set to return inside the Top-200 for the first since 2014 when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday.
